Pre workout supplements are an important part of any fitness plan because they contain ingredients that will help you get energized, burn off fat, increase strength and enhance muscle growth. With fitness and body building becoming some of the trendiest topics on the web, everyone wants to know what the best pre-workout supplements are.
A Look at Pre Workout Supplements
There are several key ingredients that go into pre-workout supplements. These include arginine, beta-alanine, betaine, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), caffeine, citrulline malate, creatine, glycerol, taurine, and tyrosine. Each of these ingredients have a certain purpose, such as energy boost, muscle growth, or fat burning.
Pre Workout Supplements Boost Your Energy
Energy is a key component to any workout. Without it, your motivation is lost. Some of the above ingredients provide you with additional energy to push through your workout. The most obvious one is caffeine, which is a very powerful stimulant that keeps fatigue to a minimum while raising energy levels.
Next is citrulline malate, which combines malic acid and the amino acid known as citrulline. This ingredient helps delay fatigue and increases energy levels by removing ammonia. Many believe that it is has taken over the mantle from arginine, which the body converts into nitric oxide.
Another ingredient in this category is tyrosine, which is another amino acid that boosts mood and energy.
Improving Muscle Strength and Stimulating Muscle Growth
The whole point of working out for most of us is to see gains in our muscles, so some of the substances in a pre workout supplement help do that.
Beta-alanine is another amino acid that helps build lean muscle mass by being converted into other chemicals. Betaine is much like beta-alanine as it can boost muscle strength by as much as 25%. It does so by promoting protein synthesis.
Creatine is being included in this category because of its ability to lead to long-term muscle growth. However, it also provides muscles with energy during your workouts, thus making it very effective in a pre-workout supplement. BCAAs also fall into this category because they have the power to help grow muscles and increase energy.
Fat Burning Properties of a Pre Workout
In order to successfully burn fat, you also must fuel your body with the right kinds of liquids. If you don’t have the necessary amount of water, you are going to become fatigued and your energy boosters will have a much harder time to support you.
Glycerol is an ingredient that aids fat burning, which is necessary in order to build muscle, by helping the body replace water and thus keeping you hydrated. Its many uses vary from marathon-running to lifting weights in the gym.
Like glycerol, taurine also helps by drawing water to your muscles, which increases muscular endurance and strength as well. It has been shown that it can increase time until exhaustion, meaning you can push through those long supersets and giant sets!
Which Supplement Combination is Right for You?
In a pre workout, you are going to see many different combinations of the above ingredients mixed together. To effectively evaluate your pre workout supplement choices, look at which ingredients from the above list are included as well as their relative prices and their product size. Other considerations are taste and the science of it all.
One look at Vintage Blast Pre-Workout Supplement shows you that they want you to know that this product does not lead to dependency. It is meant to boost the user, not force them to use the product in order to be effective.
This is very important because no one wants to have to rely on, let’s say, caffeine in order to get their workout finished. This product promises that this will not be an issue via a steady delivery rate. This means you won’t be hit by everything at once, much like a slow-release capsule or insulin.
Another difference-maker in Vintage Blast pre workout is that it contains no proprietary blends, which means that we don’t have to worry about them using non-naturally occurring ingredients. This is 100% non-GMO, Gluten Free, and it is vegetarian friendly.
Of the ingredients we talked about above, we see that Vintage Blast has Citrulline-Malate, Beta-Alanine, Arginine, and Caffeine in this supplement.
A couple of potential downsides do exist. This product should not be used by someone that is planning to go to bed shortly after use because the caffeine is active for up to three hours. Please keep in mind that everyone is different, and what is right for you may not be for someone else
Also, the price of this supplement is a little pricey compared to other options. Because of its combination of ingredients, the slow-release and the GMO factors, this one goes to the top of the pile.
Legion Pulse comes out of the gate looking very ordinary compared to Vintage Blast with its very serious-looking black packaging. However, you quickly find out that Legion Pulse is very serious about providing its customers with 100% natural ingredients as well. Like Vintage Blast, there are no “unnecessary” dyes or chemicals. Just simply your supplement.
This product contains the aforementioned beta-alanine, citrulline, betaine, and caffeine. You can see quickly that it does lack some of the ingredients that Vintage Blast has. This product makes a point that it does not include creatine in it. This is because creatine is most effective after your training sessions!
One of the cool things about Legion Pulse is that it allows you to choose from three different flavors: Watermelon, Grape, and Fruit Punch. So no worrying about blended flavors on this one! You know exactly what you are going to get.
Legion Pulse gives you 21 servings of supplement, but a serving is two scoops! Overall, this is a great product that looks out for you, the consumer.
Cellucor C4 comes out of the gate strong with sleek, shiny packaging. Right away we see that they emphasize the fact that it contains 30 servings of the supplement.
In addition to this, this product has a TON of flavors to choose from including: Berry Bomb, Blue Razz, Fruit Punch, Green Apple, Orange Dreamsicle, Pink Lemonade, Strawberry Kiwi, Strawberry Margarita, and Watermelon. It is very difficult to find this many flavors on the Kool-Aid aisle!
All joking aside, this product provides you with beta alanine, creatine, arginine, and then gives you its “explosive energy blend,” which contains tyrosine and caffeine from our list as well as a couple of other ingredients.
The fact that it contains creatine may or may not be troubling to you because we are all different, but for the purposes of this list, it makes it number three simply because the others are able to provide you with better results without it.
Another thing to keep in mind is that this is a product that may be good for someone working his or her way into the supplement world. Its taste and choice of flavors provide you an opportunity to get used to them and could allow you to work up to one of the two above if desired.
Sheer Natural Pre Workout Supplement comes out looking much like Legion Pulse did. The packaging is black with white writing and a red cap — very simple. However, it promises explosive energy and extra strength, so we think we’ll all take that trade off!
Much like Cellucor C4, Sheer pre workout guarantees palatability for it users by promising you that it is the best-tasting pre workout you will try.
Like the other three products before it, Sheer gives you all of the ingredients you want and need without any of the junk. Sheer contains citrulline, beta alanine, and creatine in its combination of supplements along with caffeine.
We do have issues, as cited above, with creatine being included in the pre-workout supplement, but if you find it useful for you, then this may be your product. An added ingredient in this one is beet root extract, which helps increase stamina and improve your blood flow.
In a Sheer pre workout supplement package, you get 30 servings (of one scoop). It also has great taste options.
